How Ecopolitan Selects Wines

Ecopolitan has searched the net, talked to wineries, and tasted samples to select the highest-quality wines that are organic, no-sulfites-added, vegan, and raw.
We've done the work so you can enjoy the best.

Organic
Most wines come from grapes grown with large amounts of pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides). Grapes are one of the most heavily sprayed crops, and the wine industry consumes roughly 50% of the total fungicides used in agriculture.

Manmade pesticides disrupt the natural ecology of the soil, leach into ground water, and poison wildlife, farm workers, and consumers. Studies of farm workers exposed to pesticides show increased cognitive dysfunction, brain damage, and birth defects. No one knows the long-term effects on consumers of the 200 pesticides used on grapes. But they are implicated in many cancers, and disorders of the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems.

Conventional agriculture also uses large amounts of chemical fertilizers. This strips the soil of minerals essential to its health and to human nutrition. Conventional wineries may use additives (colorings, stabilizers) with toxic or unknown long-term effects.

Our wines come from grapes grown and processed without manmade chemicals.

Organic farmers control weeds with cover crops... insects with natural predators... and fungus with vine-training techniques. They nurture the soil with compost and crop rotation. Healthy soil produces grapes with higher nutrient content and better taste.

Organic wineries use no chemical additives, and minimal additives of any kind. For example, there is no need to add yeast cultures, because the natural yeasts on the grape skins have not been killed by pesticides.

Organic means better for you, for your palate, and for the environment.

No sulfites added
Most wineries, even organic ones, add sulfur dioxide to their wine as a preservative. It reacts with water molecules to form sulfites.

Up to 10% of people are allergic to sulfites, suffering headaches, hives, or breathing problems. Roughly one million Americans are extremely allergic.

Our wines contain only naturally occurring sulfites.

The amounts are so low that many sulfite-sensitive people can enjoy our wines without reactions.

No-sulfites-added means lower risk of headaches, asthma, and serious allergic reactions.

Vegan
Many wineries, even organic ones, use animal products as clarifying agents. This news often shocks vegans who enjoy wine, because wine labels provide no clue about it.

The agents used include crab shells, fish byproducts, egg whites, milk protein, and gelatin from animal bones and hooves. The cow products are especially worrisome because of the risk of BSE (mad cow disease).

Our wines are produced without any animal products. They are clarified the traditional way, by racking (moving from barrel to barrel). If you wish to avoid animal products for ethical, ecological, or health reasons, you can relax at Ecopolitan.

Vegan means no cruelty in production, low environmental impact, and no exposure to mad cow disease.

Raw
Cheap wines are often pasteurized (heated) to kill bacteria introduced during sloppy production. Unfortunately, this also destroys beneficial antioxidants and phytonutrients in the wine.
Our wines are hygienically produced, with no heating used or needed. Nutrients from the grapes and fermentation process are preserved.

Raw means clean, nutritious, and as Nature intended.
